We hope this will foster solidarity and communication across LATU citywide. Outreach | Alcance Comunitario
The L.A. Tenants Union Outreach Committee is thrilled to announce the release of the Tenants Association Handbook. Nearly three years in the making, the handbook is chock-full of testimonies from various tenants associations affiliated with LATU. You’ll find a step-by-step description of how to organize an association in your apartment building, as well as in-depth tips on why a tenants association is an important part of building tenant power from a political perspective and a legal perspective. The Outreach Committee thanks all the writers, proof-readers, Language Justice translators, and graphic designers who played a role in putting this publication together. South Central | Sur Central
We have been supporting the 48 Los Amigos Swap Meet tenants fighting against the displacement of their small businesses. The landlords of the Swap Meet have served everyone with 30 day notices to vacate, but the tenants say they are here to stay! Join them every Saturday and Sunday at 307 E Jefferson Blvd to support them as they sell their merchandise outside, and demand that the owners re-open the Swap Meet safely and rescind all 30 day notices! Mid-City
The Mid-City local is making concentrated efforts to get new members involved as organizers and caseworkers. This month we rallied our members to attend a SORO Neighborhood Council meeting where the agenda featured the proposed demolition of many RSO units, including the homes of Mid-City local members. We are also preparing to host the LATU General Meeting on July 6. At this meeting, there will be a workshop about civil disobedience (CD) with attorneys Colleen Flynn and John Raphling. The workshop will focus on CD tactics and related consequences — particularly those that pertain to protests, illegal lock-outs, and other issues faced by tenants in crisis.
La sección de Mid-City se está esforzando para hacer que la nueva membresía asuma roles como organizadorxs y trabajadorxs de casos. Este mes, juntxs asistimos una reunión del Consejo Vecindario SORO donde se discutía la propuesta demolición de varias unidades RSO, incluso los hogares de algunxs miembrxs de la sección de Mid-City. Además nos preparamos para la Reunión General del SILA el 6 de julio. North Hollywood
We have been putting our organizing efforts into supporting a tenant from Sunland and another tenant in Pacoima who are actively being harassed by their landlords. We also did outreach with the Institute of Popular Education of Southern California, which gave us the opportunity to begin establishing relations with another community organization, as well as with vulnerable communities such as domestic workers and day laborers. We are actively looking to build up leadership and build towards a sustainable working class effort for the East San Fernando Valley.
Hemos estado esforzándonos por apoyar a unx inquilinx de Sunland y a otrx en Pacoima, quienes están siendo acosadxs por lxs propietarixs de sus respectivos edificios. También hicimos alcance comunitario con el Institute of Popular Education of Southern California (el Instituto de Educación Popular del Sur de California). Esto nos dió la oportunidad de entablar relaciones con otra organización comunitaria, y con otrxs trabajadorxs domésticxs y jornalerxs. Buscamos cultivar un liderazgo sostenible de la clase obrera en el este del Valle de San Fernando.
Baldwin Hills — Leimert Park — Crenshaw
We are steadfast with our deliveries for elders in our community, and we’ve supplied 225 families with dry goods and hot meals. We have continued our casework, which has been the focus of our attention. The South Central Local’s Rapid Response Team has been a tremendous help in attending to some of the tenant crises that have come to the attention of our local. Our membership has grown to over 45 people since the COVID-19 crisis hit, and we’re flyering check stands of Ralphs and Albertson’s grocery stores as part of our Food Not Rent outreach. During a speech at the Juneteenth 1-mile March, we were given an opportunity to bring awareness to the displacement caused by gang injunctions and nuisance abatement lawsuits used by the City and the police. In solidarity with the black lives matter movement.
Continuamos haciendo entregas de comida y bienes secos para lxs mayores de edad de nuestra comunidad, y ya hemos alcanzado a 225 familias. También hemos seguido nuestro trabajo de casos, lo cual ha estado al centro de nuestra atención. El equipo de Respuesta Rápida de la Sección del Sur Central nos ha ayudado tremendamente en abordar varias crisis que han surgido en nuestra sección. NELo — Northeast Local | Sección noreste
Our local has continued ramping up our outreach efforts, with another intersection party at a busy corner in Highland Park and a cruise around Northeast LA to raise awareness about the Food Not Rent campaign. We’ve also started to do weekly protest-style outreach on Fridays in residential neighborhoods. With signs, bullhorns, and flyers, we’re letting our neighbors know about the importance of organizing and building tenant power. Internally, we’ve committed to actionable steps to shift the culture of our local towards a more vibrant, equitable, and empowering one. Here are some of these steps: the creation of our Race & Equity Working Group (RE-Work); learning and implementing a transformative justice-informed accountability practice in our work; and institutionalizing mentorship structure that will empower new and old members alike to continue to grow and develop their skills as organizers and facilitators.
Nuestra sección sigue haciendo alcance comunitario, con otra fiesta de intersección en una esquina muy frecuentada de Highland Park y una caravana por el noreste de Los Ángeles para sensibilizar a la gente sobre la campaña de Comida Sí, Renta No. También hemos empezado a protestar todos los viernes en los vecindarios. Aquí, algunos pasos que hemos tomado con ese fin: la creación de nuestro Grupo Trabajador de Raza y Equidad (Race & Equity Working Group, o RE-Work); la implementación de una práctica de justicia transformativa en nuestro trabajo; y la institucionalización de una estructura de membresía que empoderará a miembrxs nuevxs y experimentadxs por igual a seguir cultivando y desarrollando sus habilidades como organizadorxs y facilitadorxs.
Hollywood
Members of the Hollywood local have been turning out in great numbers to support the Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests against police brutality. We’ve also been working alongside other locals to strengthen the anti-illegal eviction brigade. The brigade has already fought off a number of illegal lockouts. In one instance, Kaotar was locked out of her home on Mother’s Day, in direct retaliation for filing a restraining order against her abusive partner, who is her landlord’s son. With the organizing efforts, physical work, and community support of LATU members from across the city, Kaotar was able to move back inside. Organizers from the Canoga Park Local are working with her to ensure that the harassment stops and that she and her kids can safely shelter in place.
La membresía de la sección de Hollywood se ha asomado en grandes cantidades para apoyar las protestas del movimiento Las Vidas Negras Importan (Black Lives Matter, o BLM por sus siglas en inglés) contra la brutalidad policiaca. Hemos estado trabajando codo a codo con las secciones para fortalecer la brigada anti-desalojo ilegal. La brigada ya ha logrado defenderse de varios cierres ilegales. En una instancia, se le cerraron afuera a Kaotar el Día de las Madres, como represalia por haber presentado una orden de alejamiento contra su pareja abusiva, que es el hijo del propietarix de su edificio. Con los esfuerzos de movilización, trabajo físico y el apoyo comunitario, Kaotar logró mudarse de vuelta. Lxs organizadorxs de la sección de Canoga Park trabajan con ella actualmente para asegurar que el acoso pare y que ella y sus hijxs puedan refugiarse adentro seguramente.
Westwood
In the past month the Westwood Village Local has held two meetings that have discussed the issues of Local Tenants and Student Renters. We discussed in depth supporting a Black Lives Matter-LATU Resolution, the future and immediate concerns of UCLA on-campus Housing, and addressing White Supremacy in the Tenants Union space. Next meeting will host a member of the Sacramento Tenants Union as part of the ATUN Exchange Program.
Durante el mes pasado, la Sección del Westwood Village, se a reunido dos veces para discutir los asuntos afectando a lxs inquilinxs locales y lxs inquilinxs estudiantes. Hemos discutido a fondo nuestro apoyo para una Resolución de Las Vidas Negras Importan–SILA, las preocupaciones inmediatas y futuras del alojamiento en el campus de UCLA y el abordamiento de la supremacía blanca en el espacio del Sindicato de Inquilinxs. En la próxima reunión, hospedaremos a unx miembrx del Sindicato de Inquilinxs de Sacramento como parte del Programa de Intercambio Inter-Sindical de ATUN.

Language Justice | Justicia de Lenguaje
The Language Justice Committee continues to meet weekly in our virtual dojo, practicing interpretation and studying how to improve communication within LATU through a week by week analysis of meetings, translation projects, and the overall flow of information in the age of COVID. With much of the union’s work now forced into virtual spaces, language justice is confronted with new technological barriers to overcome, as are many members of our union, whose lack of access to technology remains a major obstacle. On June 21, LJ Committee and members of NELo held a socially distanced in-person Spanish-language meeting to share concerns and collectively imagine solutions. Some of those ideas are already being implemented in our locals. In other news, several members of LJ have joined the Language Workers for Black Lives Solidarity Network, an effort to support grassroots, Black-led movements for liberation.
El Comité de Justicia de Lenguaje sigue reuniéndose semanalmente en nuestro dojo virtual, para practicar la interpretación y estudiar cómo mejorar la comunicación dentro del SILA a través de un análisis de nuestras reuniones semana tras semana, junto con los proyectos de traducción y el flujo general de información en la época de COVID. Dado que la mayoría del trabajo del sindicato ahora se obliga a llevarse a cabo en espacios virtuales, la justicia de lenguaje enfrenta nuevas barreras tecnológicas a superar, al igual que muchxs miembrxs de nuestro sindicato, cuya falta de acceso a la tecnología sigue siendo un gran obstáculo. El 21 de junio, el Comité de JdeL y miembrxs de NELo tuvieron una reunión en español, en persona con distanciamiento social, para compartir preocupaciones e imaginar soluciones colectivamente. Varias de esas ideas ya se están implementando en nuestras secciones. En otras noticias, varixs miembrxs de JdeL se han unido a la red solidaria de Trabajadorxs del Lenguaje por las Vidas Negras (Language Workers for Black Lives), un esfuerzo en apoyo de los movimientos populares por la liberación liderados por personas negras.
